Our 'Showhouse Showdown' Journey

Cobblestone Homes was chosen to build two houses for the new HGTV series "Showhouse Showdown" during a nationwide search in summer 2011.

Our episode, filmed at the two Larkin Township homes in August 2011, drew a record-breaking crowd of about 700 people from throughout mid-Michigan. The episode will air at 2:30 p.m. March 24.

Mid-Michigan residents chose the winning "Showhouse Showdown" designer by voting which home they liked best during an open house Aug. 20.

The HGTV show is hosted by Michigan native Bob Guiney, who rose to fame when he starred on ABC's "The Bachelor" and later as the host of TLC's "Date My House" and the Game Show Network's "GSN Live" and "Bingo Blitz."

Cobblestone co-owner Mark Wahl showed Guiney around while he was in town — even taking him to the Midland County Fair, where they bought a pig.

coreydamenjenkinsCorey Damen JenkinsMichelleKMioMichelle K. Mio

POHlogo2Those of you who were unable to attend the filming of HGTV's "Showhouse Showdown" in August will get another chance to tour our homes featured in the show — and meet one of the show's competing interior designers — during the upcoming Fall Parade of Homes in Midland.

Corey Damen Jenkins, a professional interior designer with Design With Vision of Bloomfield Hills, was one of two competing designers in the Cobblestone Homes episode filmed in August in Midland. He will be on hand to talk with visitors at the home he decorated during the show's filming, at 3339 E. Shady Ridge Drive, from 1-5 p.m. Oct. 1-2 and Oct. 8-9. The Parade of Homes is also open 5-8 p.m. Oct. 5. It is free and open to the public.

Cobblestone built the two houses where "Showhouse Showdown" was filmed. The other home, decorated by professional interior designer Michelle K. Mio of Rariden Schumacher Mio in Birmingham, is at 3479 E. Shady Ridge Drive.

Other Cobblestone houses on the Parade of Homes tour are the net-zero energy InVision Zero home at 5018 Butterfield Drive and a home at 4908 Torrey Pines Drive in Midland. Those who tour Cobblestone's HGTV house at 3339 E. Shady Ridge Drive during the Parade of Homes can enter a drawing to win a $200 wine gift basket.

"Showhouse Showdown" pits two professional interior designers against each other in nearly identical homes. Designers are given identical decorating budgets and the chance to create a winning interior design. We were chosen to build the two Midland homes for the show through a nationwide search.

Mid-Michigan residents chose the winning designer by voting which home they liked best during an open house Aug. 20. That open house drew nearly 700 people, setting a "Showhouse Showdown" attendance record, HGTV producers said.

The winner will be announced when the Midland episode airs at 8 p.m. Oct. 17 on HGTV. Some mid-Michigan residents were interviewed during filming of the "Showhouse Showdown" open house and will appear on the show.

Thank You, Mid-Michigan, for "Showhouse" Record Attendance

ShowhouseShowdownCrowdHost Bob Guiney leads visitors into one of Cobblestone's "Showhouse Showdown" houses during the open house Saturday in Midland. Nearly 700 people turned out for the event, HGTV producers said.

We have been overwhelmed and humbled by the Great Lakes Bay Region's support of our participation in HGTV's "Showhouse Showdown." That was never more evident than when nearly 700 of you — a "Showhouse Showdown" record — came out to the open house and reception on Saturday in Midland.

Even though many of us got drenched in the downpour, there were many smiles as folks continued to arrive on the shuttle bus as late as 3 p.m. to tour Cobblestone's "Showhouse Showdown" houses. The first 100 visitors got to be part of the HGTV show by voting for which designer's house they liked best.

"Showdown" Open House Visitors Can See TV Star Bob Guiney

When "Showhouse Showdown" host Bob Guiney heard that the HGTV show was heading to film in Midland, he admits he was happy.

"The crew was like, 'Midland, Texas?' And I said, 'No, Midland, Michigan!'" the Detroit native recalled Friday. "I hadn't been home to Michigan in about eight weeks, so I was so excited.

BobGuineyOnsiteHost Bob Guiney is filmed in front of one of our Midland homes built for the new HGTV show "Showhouse Showdown." Guiney and the "Showhouse Showdown" crew will be wrapping up their time in mid-Michigan on Saturday when we host an open house and reception from 1-4 p.m. at 3339 E. Shady Ridge Drive and 3479 E. Shady Ridge Drive in Midland. Parking and shuttle service is available at the nearby Larkin Township Hall, 3027 N. Jefferson.

"I've been educating everyone on the show, stuff like the difference between a Flint coney dog and Detroit coney — you know, everything pure Michigan."

Guiney and the "Showhouse Showdown" crew will be wrapping up their time in mid-Michigan on Saturday when we host an open house and reception at 3339 E. Shady Ridge Drive and 3479 E. Shady Ridge Drive in Midland.

We built two houses especially for "Showhouse Showdown." Visitors to the open house and reception 1-4 p.m. Saturday at the homes will have the chance to see Guiney. The first 100 visitors will vote for which of the contestant-designed homes they like best. Some attendees will be asked to give their opinions on camera. Parking and shuttle service is available at the nearby Larkin Township Hall, 3027 N. Jefferson.

"My favorite part of the show is the open houses," said Guiney, who became a household name during his time on ABC's "The Bachelor." "It's great meeting and interacting with new people. My family is even coming to the open house here Saturday."

Guiney said his hosting job with "Showhouse Showdown" has been a natural fit. His father and grandfather were both builders, so he grew up around home improvement projects and real estate. He "knocked down walls" himself at a home in Ferndale, and has taken his do-it-yourself approach to homes in New York and California.

Guiney has been making the most of his time in the Great Lakes Bay Region, even adjusting his schedule to arrive in Michigan a day early and stay a day late. On Tuesday, Guiney, a longtime musician, and his band Fat Amy played a show at Hamilton Street Pub in Saginaw.

"It was packed," said Guiney, who has recorded four studio albums with the band. "Lots of people I know showed up. Friends from East Lansing and Detroit drove all the way here. Even the TV crew and designers showed up."

On Thursday, Guiney and Cobblestone Homes co-owner Mark Wahl went to the Midland County Fair, where Wahl said many people ran up and asked for photos with Guiney.

Guiney and Wahl took the time to participate in a Cobblestone Homes tradition at the fair: They bought a pig for charity.

"I do believe it was my first pig," Guiney said.

"We named him Pork Chop," Wahl added.

In addition to his time on "The Bachelor," Guiney has appeared on Oprah numerous times and has hosted the Game Show Network's "GSN Live" and "Bingo Blitz," and TLC's "Date My House." To learn more about Guiney, click here.

After the TV crews and crowds from Saturday's "Showhouse Showdown" open house have cleared, the two houses built for the HGTV show will be put up for sale.

We built the two houses, at 3339 E. Shady Ridge Drive and 3479 E. Shady Ridge Drive in Midland, especially for "Showhouse Showdown." The first 100 visitors to an open house and reception 1-4 p.m. Saturday at the homes will vote for which of the contestant-designed homes they like best. Showhouse3479fullOur houses built for HGTV's "Showhouse Showdown" are shown under construction last week in Midland. The houses, at 3339 E. Shady Ridge Drive and 3479 E. Shady Ridge Drive, will be sold after the show.

The houses will be sold with all the furnishings that the competing "Showhouse Showdown" designers chose — just as they will appear on TV when cameras roll and the homes' interior designs are revealed Saturday.

The nearly identical 3,200-square-foot houses contain four bedrooms, 3 1/2 baths and a three-car garage. They also feature a butler pantry, formal dining room, study and gourmet kitchen, and come fully landscaped on wooded lots.

"This is just great for the Great Lakes Bay Region," said Cobblestone Homes co-owner Mark Wahl. "Think of how cool it's going to be for someone to own a piece of TV history."

"Showhouse Showdown" pits two professional interior designers against each other at nearly identical homes. The designers are given identical budgets and the chance to create a winning interior.

Saturday's open house will feature drawings for prizes such as a $500 Prime Brothers Furniture gift card and $300 tree from Reder Landscaping. We will also provide refreshments in a hospitality tent, and local radio station WIOG will be broadcasting live from the event.

Parking for Saturday's event is at nearby Larkin Township Hall, 3027 N. Jefferson, and the Larkin Township Fire Department, 3022 N. Jefferson. A shuttle service will be provided to transport visitors to and from the "Showhouse Showdown" sites.

In addition, we are offering a chance for an area resident to win a free design consultation with one of competing "Showhouse Showdown" designers. Our contest is open to those who "like" our Facebook page by Aug. 31. The winner will be announced via Facebook and on this website.

No registration is required to attend the "Showhouse Showdown" open house and voting. The event is free and open to the public. Those under age 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

"Showhouse Showdown" premieres in September on HGTV. The episode filmed in Midland is expected to air this fall.
